There are many ways to volunteer for ADSEI. See below for some examples of the sort of support you can offer.

Content

We always need interesting datasets, project ideas, and classroom resources as well as stories about Data Science in the wild.

Examples of content you can provide:

  • Data Sets
  • Visualisations
    • Create interactive visualisations of more complex datasets to allow kids to explore & understand them (check out this this awesome example from Eliiza)
    • Visualisations, written or video discussions of:
      • Good graphs/Visualisatons (and why they work)
      • Bad graphs/Visualisations (what’s wrong with them, and how they can be made better)
    • Build a python library for easy visualisations
    • Create/find/write instructions for tools to help kids build their own visualisations (more creative than just graphs!)
  • Data Science
    • Write up cool data science stories in simple language
      • ways it has failed
      • amazing things it has made possible
      • useful things you or others have done with data science
      • cautionary tales – especially where initial analysis is misleading
    • Make short videos explaining data science concepts
  • Classroom resources
    • Lesson plans
    • Worksheets
    • Project ideas

You can find guidelines here for what we need, and how to make them usable for education. All content must go through an approval process before we publish it on our website to make sure it aligns with our mission and standards.

Spread the word

We always need help getting the word out.

Share & review the book, share & review the podcast, share the blog posts, post on social media, donate to support our work, and share the donation page. Share particular projects that catch your eye.

Take one of our projects into your local school, or sign up for the CSIRO STEM Professionals in Schools and use our projects.

Talk to your school about our work, and encourage them to work with us. We run teacher professional development in STEM and Data Science. We also co-design authentic community projects with schools.

Volunteer your time

We also sometimes have small jobs – an hour or two – of various sorts. Everything from editing the AI transcript of a podcast episode into something more meaningful, to writing small Python scripts to wrangle data into a more useful format. If you have occasional bits of free time and would like to help with some of these jobs, sign up here.
