About the Authors

Dr Linda McIver is an expert in STEM, Data Science, and Computing Education. With a PhD in Computer Science and extensive secondary and tertiary teaching experience, Linda founded the Australian Data Science Education Institute in 2018 to build the Critical Thinking, Data Literacy, and STEM skills of students around the world. She is the author of Raising Heretics: Teaching Kids to Change the World, a blueprint for rebuilding the education system to empower kids to be creative problem solvers. Having studied Artificial Intelligence at University, Linda has strong feelings about the many over hyped and misleading claims that the tech industry is currently making about AI.

Laura Summers is an expert in AI Ethics and Fairness, and a designer who is passionate about making technology human centered. Currently Lead Design Engineer at Pydantic, Laura is an acclaimed speaker and writer, and the creator of the Ethics Litmus Test and the Sweet Summer Child Score, tools for exploring the ethical implications of systems, to empower designers and developers to build more ethical products.

Friends for many years now, Laura and Linda have had countless conversations about the nature of technology, and how it can be guided in sustainable, ethical, and humane directions. When AI hit the headlines, it became clear that there was an urgent need for a clear, intelligible, and human centered guide to Artificial Intelligence that explained the technology, debunked the hype, and gave a rational perspective on what AI can and can’t do, now and in the future.
